Staying in touch with art… by Kiara Timm

Dear Friends,
Like every summer on the island of Cyprus, it’s same this year; the heat is welcoming in us to
the core and it is here to stay for a while. However, don’t get discouraged and don’t let it stop you from being creative during this time of the year. Summer activities are going on around the island in various places for you to enjoy and get inspired.
So, kick back, have a nice frappe, an ice tea or a chilled ouzo and stay cool!
As always, stay well, stay positive and enjoy your reading!

Enjoy your summer!

MEETING A LOCAL ARTIST…KATERINA PARPA

Focusing on one passion, direction, or type of creative expression – be it writing, painting, or fashion – has always challenged Katerina Parpa. Exploring different artistic expressions, even for a short while, is liberating. But no matter how many different things she tries out, the one that has stuck with her over the years has been the detailed naïve-art style she has done since the age of 16 using a fine-nibbed architect’s pen.

According to Katerina, “your gift to the world lies in what comes naturally for you without pressure and force.” Having said that, Katerina believes that when you find that one thing that makes your heart sings, you shouldn’t give up just because there’s a couple of bumps in the road.

If someone likes her art and wants to buy it, she is incredibly thankful and flattered. And, let’s be honest, when someone buys a piece of your art it fuels the inspirations and creativity, and it is validating. “Being validated as an artist is an incredibly wonderful feeling and I would be lying if I said I don’t hope for that when I show my work,” she says. An influential person from the Ministry of Culture came to her second solo art exhibition back in 2011, took one look at her work, said: “This is not art” and walked out. “If someone doesn’t like my art, this won’t stop me from continuing to create.”

Katerina does not do it for money… but she doesn’t undervalue her art just because she has a day job, and no artist should just because one critic doesn’t see the value and effort behind it. In her experience, those that criticize and undervalue artists are those that haven’t been brave enough to step out in faith themselves.

“A person who has been brave enough to put themselves out there, isn’t quick to criticize others who are doing the same.”

‘WAITING FOR THE SUN’ SERIES GOING AROUND THE ISLAND

In August 2021, some of the artworks from the series ‘Waiting for the sun’ were selected and went virtual around the world through an exciting 3D virtual exhibition held by Bougie Art Gallery. Now artworks of the same series is going to be exhibited physically in Limassol and Paphos venues.

‘Waiting for the Sun’ is a series of 10 acrylic paintings with the focus theme of different sunrises and sunsets on the island.  Specifically, these paintings were created during the ‘core’ period of the pandemic where lock-downs and restricted physical movement were taking place together with strict measures and controlled SMSs. The ability and the freedom to exit from the ‘walls of the house’ had at that time become a luxury, while the need to escape into nature and its beauty had increased.

These series have also been a call not only for the next sunrise or sunset but they also have a symbolic call for a brighter future. A future away from the pandemic to an overall freedom; a freedom which is not only physical but also mental. With each sunrise and sunset there is a new day and, in each day, there is a new beginning. A beginning to enjoy life and feel alive again, to appreciate little things and make the most out of it. To ‘seize the day.’

The paintings will be part of the ‘Creation in Flux: Stepping in’  group presentation organized by STO5I together with poetry and music presentations.

The Exhibitions will be held at:

Exhibit8, Georgiou Gennadiou 16, Limassol 3041, between 3 and 6 August, with the opening ceremony on 3 August at 19:30

and

Paphos at MAMA Contemporary, Andrea Ioannou 16, Street 8100 between 9 – 13 August, opening ceremony on 10 August at 19:30.
