Staying in touch with art… by Kiara Timm
Dear Friends,
As the heart of winter seems to be staying around for a while on the island, there are always some new inspiring ideas to keep your creative flow going.
Do you want to create something but you don’t know where to start?
Here are some suggestions to spark your creativity:
Start a creative journal. It is an excellent way to write down your thoughts, draw, do some doodling, play with colours. Anything that comes into your mind may be the beginning of a new idea that can be developed and materialized at a later stage.
Try out some new materials and combine them. It can be from art mediums to tools. For instance, some cheap baking tools can be excellent for mark-making techniques and create texture as well.
Check out art exhibitions and of course, any type of art can be inspiring, from music, to theatre and even poetry. Each form of art has its own beauty and grace.
If you are a book lover, there are plenty of inspiring ideas there! If you love technology needless to say, surfing the internet as most of us do these days, has limitless information on any art form.
Connect with other artists. Brainstorming and exchanging views can foster not only new creative ideas but also can open up some wonderful collaborations!

Meeting a local artist… Photoula Ioannou
A mother of four, a devoted art therapist and ceramist, a gently soul, this is Photoula Ioannou. Born in the province of the occupied side of Nicosia, she moved after the war to the Greek Cypriot side of the capital. She graduated in 1977 from Greece with her studies focused on Cyprus Handcrafts. She worked for many years dedicated to the traditional Cyprus handcraft art and artifacts.
At some point, she was offered a position to work as an art therapist at the psychiatric department in Nicosia. It was a decision that she made in order to support her family as well.
Pottery won her heart from all the different skills she acquired through her studies and her work, that she later applied to her art therapy work. Her patients got to express themselves through pottery while, as she explained, she gets inspired by their stories. Her patience and willingness to adapt to different situations, has helped her to overcome daily challenges and to seek for solutions through her art. Through this journey, her passion for clay and her work as an art therapist is constantly growing and she hopes to be able to continue her work until she retires – and afterwards.
Photoula is also a member of the Potters’ Association and has participated in many exhibitions in various places around the island.
Her source of inspiration is gained from nature, visits to museums, travels and through the internet. Apart from her work as an art therapist, Photoula continues to create her own pottery at home during her free time. She loves to create as she feels it is part of her life and would like to continue to create as long as she can!

CULTURAL FOOTPRINTS OF LATINS IN CYPRUS /
VISUAL ARTS COMPETITION FOR YOUTH
The Ministry of Education & Culture has announced a Pancyprian Art Competition organized in collaboration with the Youth Section of the Latin Catholic Community’s association “Thriskeftiki Omada Latinon Kyprou”.
The Art Competition has the theme of “The Cultural Footprint of Latins in Cyprus” and aims to encourage pupils to get to know about the presence of the Latin Catholic community of Cyprus – its history as well as its important contribution to the cultural heritage of Cyprus.
The exhibition is open to participation of all pupils from private and state schools with categories for junior school, gymnasium and lyceum of all ages regardless of their religious background.
Deadline is 8 April 2022
Art teachers are invited to encourage students to participate in the competition, where participation can be individual or group.
Participants will be given honorary diplomas and the distinguished contestants will be awarded prizes. There will also be an exhibition held with the winning entries in summer 2022 in Nicosia.
